Children have a natural innocence and inquisitive approach to life that seems to wane as we age. Spending time with them can be a great way invigorate your mind and remind yourself how to be youthful. I try to find time to volunteeer to teach art in my kid’s 3rd grade class. Before I started I was hoping to teach them as much as I could. However, after I started I realized that I learn much more from them than they do from me. The kids remind me how to be simple, resilient, carefree and honest. Try out new apps that your teenager uses. Read a book they are reading. If you can, volunteer at your kids’ school or Sunday school. In most cases, you will learn just as much from them as they will from you.
6) Don’t sweat the small stuff
Things that used to set you off in your 20s should have less and less of that effect the more you age. Allow yourself the inner peace you deserve. Meditate more. If a stressful situation arises, take 5 deep breaths in, 5 deep breaths out for 5 seconds each. Do this 5 times. This method of calming has worked well for Navy seals in stressful situations.
5) Decide what matters to you most and invest time and energy on that
Life is short. Time is one of the only gifts we can never get back. I have found that the older I get, the more I place value on my time much more than anything else, even money. Whether it be your children, your marriage, your business, your family, your health, whatever it is. Prioritize your time for those things that matter to you most and make every second count. You will have no regrets if you do.
6) Try new things
This is one of the best ways to renew your mindset as you age. Take a new dance class. Try a new haircut or color. Take a trip to somewhere new every year. Read a book you would not normally pick up. Not only does trying new things keep your mind sharp and challenged, but it makes for a more interesting, fulfilled life as you age.
5) Allow yourself to forgive
Nothing can make you age quickly like harboring unforgiveness. Allowing yourself to forgive creates room for a positive attitude which is an important factor in healthy aging according to Dr. Bortz. If you can’t allow yourself to forgive for the other person’s sake, be selfish and forgive for your own inner peace and sound mind.
4) Smile more
Smiling not only makes others more comfortable around you, it also is the most common trait of confident people. You have every reason to be confident and secure as you age. Why not share it?
3) Be kind to others
Genuine kindness to others gets more and more rare as the days pass making it a more valuable, sought after human trait. Once you adopt this, you will find all of a sudden others will be looking for ways to serve your purposes and be kind to you just because. I’ve learned that being kind can be as easy as treating others how you would want them to treat your child. In the wise words of Maya Angelou “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.
2)Master the art of learning how to fail
It is never too late to learn this valuable skill; the art of using failure as a stepping stone and not a stumbling block. Failure is an intricate part of achieving success. If you’ve never failed at anything, likely you are not challenging yourself enough. Achieving your full life’s potential as the years progress becomes exponentially easier once this art is mastered. 1) Take care of yourself
With our busy lives of caring for everyone else but ourselves, we learn to put ourselves last on the list, and feel guilty if things are any other way to boot. I have learned that the best way to care for those around me who I love is to care for myself, physically, mentally and emotionally. Be active, regularly, even if it’s just taking a 30 min walk outside at the start or end of your day. Look for ways to stay motivated. Avoid negative people and stress. Eat food more fruits and vegetables and adopt a Mediterranean style diet. Work on cutting out bad habits like smoking. Investing in your yourself is the best gift you can give to yourself and to those you love.
